EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from 1935, Hugh Cecil Lowther, the 5th Earl of Lonsdale, can be seen enjoying the opening performance of Bertram Mills Circus at Olympia, London. Dressed impeccably in a formal suit and holding a cigar, the Earl takes on the role of President of the circus for the evening, presenting bouquets to the lady members of the company. Born in 1857, Lord Lonsdale was the second son of the 3rd Earl of Lonsdale and succeeded his older brother as Earl in 1882. Known for his passion for sports and his love of the good life, Lonsdale was often referred to as "England's greatest sporting gentleman." He was a founding member of the National Sporting Club and donated the original Lonsdale Belts for boxing. The name "Lonsdale" would later be given to a clothing brand of boxing garments, worn by legendary boxers such as Muhammad Ali. Despite his aristocratic status, Lord Lonsdale was known for his approachable and friendly demeanor. Here, he is seen in a more casual setting, enjoying the excitement and wonder of the circus. The photograph captures a moment of relaxation and enjoyment for the nobleman, showcasing his charisma and appreciation for the arts. The Earl's presence at Bertram Mills Circus adds an air of sophistication and intrigue to the event, demonstrating the intertwining of the aristocracy and popular entertainment in early 20th century England. This photograph is a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a unique perspective on the life of a nobleman who was as at home in the ring as he was in the drawing room.
