1879 25th Bursting Caused Condition Damage Damaged Exercise Exploded Explosion Fault Fracture Practice Turret Ismid Left Hand Thunderer
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the aftermath of the catastrophic explosion that occurred on board HMS Thunderer during a routine gunnery practice exercise on January 25, 1879. The 38-ton gun, located on the starboard side of the turret, burst into flames and exploded, causing significant damage. The top left-hand side of the image reveals the site of the explosion, where the gun once stood. The force of the blast created a fracture, visible on the top right-hand side of the image, which extends from the turret wall. The line of fracture provides a stark reminder of the destructive power of the explosion. HMS Thunderer, a first-class ironclad, was a crucial part of the British Royal Navy's fleet at the time. The ship had seen action in the Anglo-Egyptian War and the Anglo-Zulu War, and was undergoing routine maintenance and training when the tragedy occurred. The cause of the explosion was later determined to be a fault in the gun's breech, which had not been properly repaired after previous use. The incident resulted in the deaths of 21 crew members and injured many more. This historical photograph, taken by Ismid, provides a poignant glimpse into the past, offering a reminder of the risks and challenges faced by those who served in the navy during this era. The damage to the turret and the line of fracture serve as a testament to the power and unpredictability of military technology, even in the hands of skilled and experienced personnel.
