EDITORS COMMENTS
A Scene from the Unsuccessful Sveaborg Rebellion of 1906 in Finland: Russian Warships Bombarding Suomenlinna Fortress The Sveaborg Rebellion, also known as the Mutiny of 1906, was a significant event in Finnish history that took place between 30 June and 2 July 1906. This rebellion, which unfolded at the historic sea fortress of Suomenlinna, near Helsinki, was a part of the larger Russian Revolution. The Russian soldiers stationed at the fortress mutinied due to mistreatment and a desire for better living conditions. In this evocative image from the Mary Evans Prints Online archive, we witness the chaos and intensity of the rebellion as Russian warships bombard the fortress, which at that time was occupied by the rebels. The red flag, a symbol of the rebellion, can be seen flying proudly above the fortress walls, while artillery from both sides is being fired. The determination and resolve of the rebels are palpable, as they stand their ground against the Russian domination and authority. The rebellion, which lasted for just 60 hours, ultimately proved to be unsuccessful. The Russian forces, with their superior firepower, were able to quell the uprising, leaving behind a trail of destruction in their wake. This scene serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and struggles that Finland faced during this tumultuous period in its history.
