EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image transports us back to the 16th century in Lithuania, where the sun held a significant role in the religious beliefs of a small yet devoted sect of worshippers. Known as the "Sauleivės" or "Sun Maidens," these individuals practiced a form of sun worship that was deeply rooted in the ancient pagan traditions of the region. The year is 1555, and the scene unfolds in the verdant countryside of Lithuania. A group of women, dressed in flowing white robes adorned with intricate floral patterns, gather around an ancient stone altar. Their faces are upturned towards the sky, their arms outstretched, as they pay homage to the life-giving sun. In the foreground, a young woman holds a small child, symbolizing the continuity of life and the passing of traditions from one generation to the next. Sun worship was not an uncommon practice in Europe during the Middle Ages, and it held a particularly strong presence in Lithuania. The country's pagan beliefs were deeply intertwined with the natural world, and the sun was seen as the source of all life and energy. The Sauleivės believed that the sun goddess, Saulė, protected their land and ensured the fertility of the earth. Despite the encroachment of Christianity, which was gaining ground in Lithuania during this period, the Sauleivės continued to practice their ancient rites. This image offers a rare glimpse into their world, a world where the sun held the power to unite a community in reverence and awe. The women's unwavering devotion to their goddess serves as a reminder of the enduring connection between humans and the natural world, a connection that transcends time and continues to inspire us today.
