EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Stoll Theatre on Portugal Street, near Aldwych, London, in the heart of the city's vibrant West End theatre district, during the 1940s. The Beaux-Arts style building, with its grand façade and intricate details, once opened its doors in 1911 as the London Opera House. A significant moment in the theatre's history came between 1914 and 1915, when it served as the National Theatre of England. However, its most notable owner was Oswald Stoll, who purchased the theatre in 1916. During the 1940s, the Stoll Theatre was the venue for various productions, including the popular "Stars on Ice" ice revue. The theatre's elegant interior, with its ornate decorations and plush seating, provided the perfect setting for these spectacular ice shows. The photograph's title, "Stars on Ice," adds an intriguing layer of mystery, leaving us to wonder about the specific performance that took place on this particular evening. Unfortunately, the Stoll Theatre's history came to an end in 1957, as it was eventually demolished to make way for a modern office block. Today, the Peacock Theatre now stands in its place, continuing the rich tradition of live performances in this historic area. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Stoll Theatre's past glories, offering a glimpse into London's theatrical history and the magic of the 1940s.
