Asteroid 243 Ida

This view of the asteroid 243 Ida is a mosaic of five image frames acquired by the Galileo spacecraft. Ida is the second asteroid ever encountered by a spacecraft. It appears to be about 52 kilometers (32 miles) in length, more than twice as large as Gaspra, the first asteroid observed by Galileo. Ida is an irregularly shaped asteroid placed by scientists in thes class (believed to be like stony or stony iron meteorites). It is a member of the Koronis family, presumed fragments left from the breakup of a precursor asteroid in a catastrophic collision. This view shows numerous craters, including many degraded craters larger than any seen on Gaspra

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Asteroid 243 Ida, captured by the Galileo spacecraft. Composed of five image frames, this mosaic offers a detailed view of Ida, which measures an impressive 52 kilometers (32 miles) in length – more than twice the size of its predecessor Gaspra. Scientists have classified Ida as an irregularly shaped asteroid belonging to the stony or stony iron meteorite class. As a member of the Koronis family, Ida is believed to be one of many fragments resulting from a catastrophic collision that shattered its precursor asteroid. The surface of Ida is adorned with numerous craters, some even larger and more degraded than those observed on Gaspra. Set against a striking black background, this close-up snapshot allows us to appreciate the texture and intricacies present on this celestial body. Nestled within the vastness of outer space, Ida stands as a testament to our ongoing exploration and understanding of minor planets within our solar system. With no human presence in sight, this solitary object serves as a reminder of both our insignificance in comparison to the grandeur of the universe and our insatiable curiosity that drives us further into deep space exploration. This mesmerizing photograph captures not only scientific significance but also evokes wonder at nature's ability to create such diverse celestial bodies like asteroids.
