The Staffordshire County Lunatic Asylum was established in 1898 on Cheadle Road, Cheddleton, near Leek. The asylums extensive vegetable gardens are in the foreground. The asylum was later known as Staffordshire Mental Hospital, then St Edwards Mental Hospital, and finally as just St Edwards Hospital
