EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the pivotal moment in the life of St. Paul, as described in the New Testament of the Bible, known as the 'Damascus Road Conversion.' The image captures the daring and clandestine escape of Saul of Tarsus, who would later become the renowned apostle Paul, following his transformative encounter with Jesus Christ. As Saul, a devout Pharisee and persecutor of Christians, journeyed to Damascus with the intention of arresting and bringing back to Jerusalem any followers of 'The Way,' an unforeseen event would forever alter the course of his life. As he approached the city, a blinding light from heaven suddenly enveloped him, and he heard a voice asking, 'Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?' Struck with fear and awe, Saul fell to the ground, blinded and trembling. The men traveling with him stood motionless, unsure of what to do. A mysterious figure, later revealed to be Ananias, approached and restored Saul's sight, revealing to him the truth of Jesus Christ and the mission he was now called to fulfill. This momentous event marked the beginning of St. Paul's new life as an apostle, spreading the teachings of Christianity throughout the Mediterranean world. The risky escape from Damascus, where he had been hunted as an enemy, was just the beginning of his incredible journey. This historical print, with its intricate details and vivid colors, transports us back to that pivotal moment in time, allowing us to witness the transformative power of faith and the courage it takes to follow one's convictions, even in the face of danger.
