However, the English Navy, under the command of Sir Francis Drake and Lord Howard of Effingham, managed to inflict significant damage on the Spanish fleet during the Battle of Gravelines. With their morale and supplies depleted, the remnants of the Armada were forced to retreat. The long and perilous journey home through the stormy waters of the North Atlantic was fraught with danger. The ships had to navigate around Scotland and Ireland, facing the wrath of the unpredictable weather. Many ships were lost along the way, and those that did make it back to Spain had suffered heavy damage.
