EDITORS COMMENTS
This sepia photograph captures Sophia Wilhelmina of Nassau, the elegant and gracious wife of King Oscar II of Sweden, during her time as Queen Consort (1872-1907). Born on November 3, 1836, in Weilburg, Germany, Sophia was the eldest daughter of Adolph, Duke of Nassau, and his wife, Princess Pauline of Württemberg. In 1853, she married the future King of Sweden, Oscar, who was then the Crown Prince. Sophia's coronation took place on May 17, 1859, in Stockholm Cathedral, marking the beginning of her long and devoted reign alongside her husband. Throughout their marriage, Sophia was known for her intelligence, charm, and dedication to her role as Queen. She was an active patron of the arts, supporting Swedish artists and cultural institutions, and was also known for her humanitarian efforts, particularly her work with the Red Cross. In this photograph, Sophia is seen wearing the traditional Swedish diadem, known as the "Three-Cornered Crown," which dates back to the 14th century. The crown is adorned with pearls, diamonds, and emeralds, and is a symbol of the monarchy's rich history and tradition. Sophia is also wearing a beautiful necklace, adding to her regal appearance. King Oscar II and Queen Sophia had no children of their own, but they were deeply loved by the Swedish people. Their reign was marked by peace, prosperity, and cultural advancements. After Oscar's death in 1907, Sophia continued to serve as regent for their son-in-law, Crown Prince Gustaf VI Adolf, until his coming of age in 1920. Sophia passed away on February 26, 1891, leaving behind a legacy of grace, intelligence, and dedication to her country and people.
