Some of the Great Powers Troops in Crete
Although much of modern Greece had been independent since the 1820s, Crete remained in Ottoman hands. A Greek force arrived to annex the island in 1897 and the Great Powers acted, occupying the island and dividing it into British, French, Russian and Italian areas of control. Here some of those the troops from these Great Powers can be seen - British in the middle (in pith helmets and tartan trousers (!), Russians on the left, French on the right and a row of Italian soldiers at the rear (lower troops only)

Annex Control Cretan Crete Forces Powers Rule Ottoman
EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken in the late 19th century, some of the troops from the Great Powers are depicted as they stood guard on the island of Crete. The complex history of Crete is one of colonialism, occupation, and political turmoil. Despite the fact that much of modern Greece had gained its independence in the 1820s, Crete remained under Ottoman rule. In 1897, a Greek force attempted to annex the island, leading to a violent uprising and the intervention of the Great Powers. The British, French, Russian, and Italian forces arrived on the island to maintain peace and order, each power taking control of specific areas. In this image, we see representatives of these forces, with British soldiers standing proudly in the middle, easily identifiable by their pith helmets and tartan trousers. To their left, Russian soldiers can be seen, their distinctive uniforms and bearing an air of authority. On the right, French troops are lined up, their blue and red uniforms a stark contrast to the other forces. At the rear, a row of Italian soldiers can be seen, their helmets and uniforms indicating their military presence. The occupation of Crete by the Great Powers was a significant moment in the history of the island and the region as a whole. It marked the end of Ottoman rule and the beginning of a new era of colonialism and political instability. The photograph serves as a reminder of this fascinating period in history, and the complex web of international relations that shaped the world at the turn of the 20th century.
