EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures Sir Robert Peel, the influential English statesman and Prime Minister, on horseback around 1850. Peel, born in 1788, was a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) known for his strong views on various issues, including Irish Catholicism and the debate between Free Trade and Protectionism. He is best remembered for his role in organizing the London Police Force in the 1820s, which significantly impacted British law enforcement. Peel's political career was marked by his dedication to reform, particularly in the realm of public safety. His efforts led to the establishment of the Metropolitan Police Force, which came to be known as "Peelers" or "Bobbies" in honor of their founder. Despite his many accomplishments, Peel's life was tragically cut short on June 29, 1850, when he was thrown from his horse and sustained fatal injuries. The image of Peel on horseback serves as a poignant reminder of his significant contributions to English history. Peel's political stance on Irish Catholicism and economic policies, such as Free Trade versus Protectionism, were contentious during his time. His views on these matters were influential in shaping the political landscape of the 19th century. This engraving offers a glimpse into the life of a man who left an indelible mark on the history of England, particularly in the areas of law enforcement and political reform.
