EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Richard Browne: A Distinguished Career in Politics and War This evocative portrait captures the likeness of Sir Richard Browne (1593-1669), an influential figure in English politics during the tumultuous 17th century. Browne's career spanned various roles, most notably as a Parliamentary general in the English Civil War and later as an Alderman and Lord Mayor of London. During the Civil War, Browne rose to prominence as a military commander, leading troops for the Parliamentarian cause against King Charles I. His strategic prowess and unwavering commitment to the Parliamentarian cause earned him respect and admiration from his peers. The war ended in 1649 with the execution of King Charles I, and Browne, like many others, had to adapt to the new political landscape. Browne's political career continued to flourish, and he was appointed as an Alderman of London in 1654. In 1656, he was elected Lord Mayor of London, a position he held with distinction until 1657. Browne's tenure as Lord Mayor was marked by his commitment to rebuilding the city after the devastating effects of the Civil War. He oversaw the repair of damaged infrastructure and the restoration of public buildings, ensuring that London continued to thrive as a commercial and cultural hub. Despite his loyalty to the Parliamentarian cause, Browne's political allegiances were tested during the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. He was pardoned by King Charles II and continued to serve in various civic roles until his death in 1669. This portrait, likely taken towards the end of his life, serves as a testament to Sir Richard Browne's remarkable career and his enduring impact on English history.
