EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir James Clark Ross (1800-1862): A Pioneering Scottish Explorer in the Arctic This evocative photograph captures Sir James Clark Ross, a renowned Scottish explorer, dressed in his explorer's uniform, gazing intently through a telescope. Ross is best known for his groundbreaking Arctic expeditions, which significantly advanced our understanding of the Arctic region and the position of the magnetic north. Born in Scotland in 1800, Ross joined the Royal Navy at a young age and quickly distinguished himself as a skilled navigator and cartographer. In 1818, he was appointed as an assistant to Sir John Franklin, another famous Arctic explorer. Ross's first Arctic expedition, led by Captain William Parry, took place in 1821, during which they reached 82°27'N, the northernmost point reached by a British expedition until Roald Amundsen's successful North Pole expedition in 1926. However, Ross's most significant achievement came during his second Arctic expedition, which began in 1830 and lasted until 1833. During this expedition, Ross and his team discovered the Bay of Biscayne, Victoria Strait, and the North Magnetic Pole, which he determined to be located near 80°32'N, 97°38'W. This discovery was a major breakthrough in understanding the Earth's magnetic field and its relationship to the geographic north pole. This historical photograph, taken in 1862, captures Ross in his prime, reflecting on his remarkable achievements in the realm of Arctic exploration. Ross's legacy continues to inspire future generations of explorers and scientists, as we continue to explore the vast and mysterious Arctic region.
