1860 Barrie C1900 Dramatist Matthew Novelist Photographic Pictured 1937

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photographic portrait captures the essence of Sir James Matthew Barrie, the renowned Scottish novelist and dramatist, around the turn of the 20th century. Born on May 9, 1860, in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland, Barrie would go on to become one of the most celebrated literary figures of his time. Barrie's literary career began in earnest in the late 1800s with the publication of several novels, including "A Window in Thrums" and "The Little Minister." However, it was his work for children that would bring him international fame. In 1886, he published "The Little White Bird," which included the story of Peter Pan, a mischievous boy who could fly and never grew up. This character would become the basis for Barrie's most famous work, "Peter and Wendy," which was first performed as a play in 1904 and published as a novel in 1911. Barrie's connection to Peter Pan was so strong that he would often refer to himself as "Peter Pan's papa." He also bequeathed the rights to the Peter Pan stories to the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London, ensuring that the proceeds from the plays and books would benefit sick children. This photograph, taken around 1900, captures Barrie in the prime of his career, with a thoughtful expression that hints at the depth of his imagination. The image has been carefully preserved and is now available as a high-quality print from Mary Evans Prints Online. A must-have for any literary or historical collection, this print offers a glimpse into the life of a man who brought joy and wonder to generations of readers with his timeless tales.
