EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving captures the historic moment as Sir Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) sets out from Yambuya Camp on June 28, 1887, during the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. Emin Pasha, a German doctor, explorer, linguist, and the Governor of the Egyptian Equatorial Province, had retreated to Wadelai, near Lake Albert, with 10,000 followers during the Mahdist Rising of the mid-1880s. Cut off from all communication, Emin Pasha was considered lost, so the British government sent out a rescue party led by Stanley. In this scene, Stanley gives a few final orders to Major Barttelot (centre, with notebook) before leading the advance column out into the jungle to search for Emin Pasha. Stanley reached Emin Pasha in April 1888, bringing much-needed supplies and relief to the beleaguered governor. This image shows the historical significance of the moment as Stanley and his team embarked on their mission to find and rescue Emin Pasha, a crucial event in the exploration and colonization of Central Africa. The engraving, produced in 1890, depicts Stanley wearing a dark jacket as he gives instructions to his team. Major Barttelot, also dressed in dark clothing, takes notes in preparation for the journey ahead. The jungle looms in the background, a reminder of the challenges that lay ahead for the expedition. This important historical image is a testament to the bravery and determination of Stanley and his team, who played a significant role in the exploration and relief efforts of Central Africa during a time of great turmoil and uncertainty.
