EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Henry Guildford: A Prominent Figure at the Field of the Cloth of Gold Sir Henry Guildford (1489-1532) was a prominent English courtier and nobleman during the reign of King Henry VIII. He held two significant positions at the Tudor court: Master of the Horse and Controller of the Household. These roles placed him in close proximity to the monarch, and he accompanied Henry VIII to many important events. One such occasion was the legendary Field of the Cloth of Gold, a grand meeting between Henry VIII and King Francis I of France in 1520. The Field of the Cloth of Gold was a spectacular display of diplomacy and pageantry. Held in the open fields between Calais and Guines in northern France, the event brought together two of the most powerful monarchs of the time. The English and French courts came together for a week of feasting, tournaments, and entertainment. In this evocative image from the Mary Evans Picture Library, Sir Henry Guildford is depicted in his role as Master of the Horse. He stands proudly, dressed in the finery of the day, with an air of authority and confidence. His horse, adorned with rich trappings, reflects the opulence of the event. Sir Henry's role as Master of the Horse meant that he was responsible for the care and management of the king's horses, as well as leading the royal stables. As Controller of the Household, Sir Henry was also in charge of managing the daily running of the royal household, including the provision of food, accommodation, and other essential services. His importance to the court is underlined by his presence at the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a testament to his close relationship with King Henry VIII. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the Tudor court, and the pivotal role played by Sir Henry Guildford in the events of the time.
