1852 1894 Colville Commissioner Declared Protectorate Uganda 1907

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Henry Edward Colville (1852-1933): A Visionary Commissioner in the Making of British Uganda This evocative photograph captures Sir Henry Edward Colville, a pivotal figure in the history of Uganda, in his military uniform from the late 19th century. Sir Henry, born on March 2, 1852, served as the Commissioner of Uganda when the region was declared a British Protectorate on January 3, 1894. In the image, Sir Henry dons the traditional military attire of the British colonial era, complete with a high-collared tunic, epaulets, and a sash adorned with the insignia of his rank. The stern yet resolute expression on his face suggests the gravity of the momentous occasion that was unfolding in Uganda. The year 1894 marked a significant turning point in the region's history, as the British sought to assert their influence and protect their interests in the face of competition from other European powers. Sir Henry's role in the declaration of the protectorate was instrumental in establishing British rule in Uganda, setting the stage for the country's eventual integration into the British Empire. Sir Henry's tenure as Commissioner lasted until 1897, during which time he worked tirelessly to maintain peace and order in the region. His efforts were not without challenges, as he faced resistance from various local rulers and tribes, as well as from other European powers. Nevertheless, Sir Henry's vision and determination ultimately proved successful, laying the groundwork for the British administration that would govern Uganda for decades to come. This photograph, taken around 1907, serves as a poignant reminder of Sir Henry Colville's crucial contributions to the history of Uganda and the British Empire. As we gaze upon his steadfast visage, we are transported back in time to an era of exploration, conquest, and the shaping of the modern world.
