EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir George Ayscue (1618-1685): A British Naval Commander of Distinction from the Age of Sail This evocative portrait captures the stern yet resolute visage of Sir George Ayscue, a prominent British naval commander of the 17th century. Born in 1618, Ayscue rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy during a time of great turmoil and change. The Age of Sail, as it came to be known, was marked by intense naval competition between European powers, particularly England, France, and the Netherlands. Ayscue's naval career began in earnest during the English Civil War, when he served under the Parliamentarian Admiral Robert Blake. He distinguished himself in several engagements, including the Battle of Portland in 1653, where he commanded a frigate. Following the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660, Ayscue's loyalty to the Crown was rewarded with a series of important commands. One of Ayscue's most notable achievements came in 1671, when he was appointed Governor of Tangier, a strategically important fortress city in North Africa. Ayscue's tenure was marked by a successful defense against a major Moroccan assault in 1672. He also oversaw the expansion of the city's fortifications and the establishment of a trading post. Despite his successes, Ayscue's tenure in Tangier was not without controversy. He was accused of mismanaging resources and neglecting the welfare of his troops. These allegations led to his recall in 1673, and he was subsequently court-martialed and dismissed from the navy. Despite the controversy that surrounded his later years, Sir George Ayscue's contributions to the Royal Navy during the Age of Sail were significant. This portrait, with its solemn yet determined expression, serves as a testament to his leadership and courage in the face of adversity.
