EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of Sierra Leone as members of the Frontier Police force join forces with the West Indian Regiment troops during the suppression of the Hut Tax War insurrection in 1898. The Hut Tax War was an uprising by the native population of Sierra Leone against the imposition of a new tax on their huts by the British colonial administration. The Sierra Leone Frontier Police, established in 1894, were responsible for maintaining law and order in the remote and often unruly areas of the colony. In this image, we see them standing proudly with their rifles, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, ready to join their British counterparts in quelling the rebellion. Meanwhile, the West Indian Regiment, a military unit composed mainly of black soldiers from the Caribbean, had been sent from Britain to aid in the suppression of the uprising. The Mendi, a troop ship carrying the regiment, had tragically sunk off the coast of Sierra Leone in February 1898, resulting in the loss of over 800 lives. Despite this devastating loss, the remaining troops pressed on, determined to fulfill their duty. This photograph offers a glimpse into a complex moment in the history of Sierra Leone and the broader history of colonialism in Africa. It highlights the role of the Frontier Police and the West Indian Regiment in maintaining order during a time of unrest, as well as the broader implications of colonial taxation policies and their impact on local populations.
