EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the Hundred Years War, as French forces, led by Jean Bourreau, Duke of Alençon, and Jean II de Rieux, Count of Penthièvre, prepare to storm the English-built Bastille of Dieppe in 1443. The Bastille, a formidable fortress guarding the entrance to the port, had been in English hands since 1417, and its capture marked an important step towards the eventual expulsion of the English from mainland Europe. The siege of Dieppe was a significant military engagement in the ongoing conflict between France and England, with both sides vying for control of the strategic port town. The French forces, determined to reclaim the Bastille, laid siege to the fortress in the autumn of 1442. Despite initial setbacks, the French persisted, and in the spring of 1443, they launched a successful assault on the Bastille, which is depicted in this print. The scene shows the French soldiers, dressed in armor and wielding weapons, scaling the walls of the Bastille, while others prepare to breach the gates below. English defenders can be seen firing arrows and hurling projectiles from the battlements, but it is clear that the tide has turned against them. The English flag, which once flew proudly over the Bastille, has been replaced by the French banner. This print offers a glimpse into the intense and often brutal military campaigns of the Hundred Years War, and serves as a reminder of the significant role that the siege of Dieppe played in the eventual outcome of the conflict. The capture of the Bastille was a symbolic victory for the French, and a crucial step towards their ultimate goal of reclaiming their territory from the English.
