G-ADUV, or Cambria as it was affectionately known, was a Short S23 Empire Flying Boat that played a significant role in the history of maritime aviation. This historic aircraft, manufactured by Short Brothers in Belfast, Northern Ireland, was one of the last flying boats produced by the company before the Second World War. The Short S23 Empire Flying Boat was a versatile and innovative design, combining the capabilities of a seaplane and a landplane. It was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Kestrel engines, which gave it a top speed of 130 miles per hour and a range of over 1,000 miles. This made it an ideal choice for long-range transport and reconnaissance missions. Cambria was delivered to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1936 and saw active service during the early years of World War II. It was used primarily for coastal patrols and anti-submarine warfare. In 1940, Cambria was involved in a daring rescue mission, flying low over the waves to pick up survivors from the SS Yongala, a cargo ship that had been torpedoed by a German U-boat. After the war, Cambria was returned to the UK and eventually ended up in private hands. It was restored to its former glory and became a popular attraction at air shows and fly-ins.
