The Civil War's most destructive military campaign had begun in November, with Sherman leading his forces on a scorched earth march through Georgia, destroying infrastructure and livestock to deny supplies to the Confederate army. By the time they reached Savannah, the Union army had effectively cut off Confederate General Johnston's forces from their supply lines, forcing them to abandon their position.
