1885 Bulgarian Bulgarians Defeat Refugees Serb Serbian Serbo Fugitives Pirot

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image captures the moment of displacement and despair as Serbian refugees from the town of Pirot begin their arduous journey towards Palanka following the defeat of their army by the Bulgarian forces in November 1885. The Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78 had ended with the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano, which granted autonomy to Bulgaria and granted the Serbs the region of Nish and Pirot. However, the Congress of Berlin in 1885 reduced the size of the Bulgarian state and left the Serbs under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The Serbian population in Pirot, located in the southern part of the Serbian province, was particularly affected by this turn of events. When the Bulgarian army marched towards Pirot in late November 1885, the Serbian garrison put up a valiant resistance but was ultimately defeated. The town fell to the Bulgarians on November 27, and the Serbian population was forced to flee their homes. This photograph, taken circa 1885, shows a group of Serbian refugees making their way towards Palanka, a town in the Serbian province that was still under Ottoman rule. The faces of the men, women, and children in the image are etched with the anguish and exhaustion of their journey. They carry their meager possessions on their backs, and some cling to their children as they trudge along the road. The image is a stark reminder of the human cost of war and the upheaval it brings. The defeat of the Serbian army in Pirot marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the region, one marked by continued instability and conflict. The Serbian refugees in this photograph were just a small part of the larger wave of displacement that would sweep across the Balkans in the coming decades. Yet, their story remains an important one, a testament to the resilience and determination of the human spirit in the face of adversity.
