EDITORS COMMENTS
Selim II, also known as Sari or the Blonde Sultan, was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1566 to 1574. Born in 1524, Selim was the son of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his consort Roxelana. He ascended to the throne at the age of forty-two following the death of his father. This striking portrait of Selim II, taken from a profile view, captures the sultan in the prime of his life. He is depicted wearing the traditional Ottoman turban, a symbol of his royal status and power. Selim's blonde hair, an unusual feature for an Ottoman ruler, gives him an ethereal and almost otherworldly appearance. The circular composition of the image draws the viewer's attention to Selim's face and the intricate details of his attire. The rich fabrics and ornate jewelry adorning the sultan underscore his wealth and opulence. Selim II's reign was marked by political instability and military conflicts with Persia and Europe. Despite these challenges, he continued to patronize the arts and sciences, further cementing the Ottoman Empire's reputation as a cultural and intellectual powerhouse. This historic portrait of Selim II is a testament to the artistic and cultural achievements of the Ottoman Empire during the late 16th century. It offers a glimpse into the life of a complex and enigmatic ruler, whose legacy continues to shape Turkish history and identity. Mary Evans Picture Library's collection of historical prints offers a wealth of information and insights into the past, allowing us to explore the lives and times of fascinating figures like Selim II.
