EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic moment at the 1948 London Olympics, Scout leader and athlete, Harry Savage, proudly holds the Australian sign in front of the Australian athletic contingent during the opening ceremony at Wembley Stadium. Savage, a member of the 1st South Melbourne Scout Group, was selected to lead the Australian team as a result of his outstanding athletic achievements and dedication to Scouting. The Olympics, held from July 29 to August 14, marked the revival of the Games after a 12-year hiatus due to World War II. The Summer Olympiad featured 13 sports and saw the participation of 31 nations. This iconic image captures the spirit of camaraderie and national pride as the Australian contingent prepares to make their entrance into the stadium. The Scout Association played a significant role in the development of the Australian Olympic team, with many Scouts participating in various sports and serving as officials. This photograph is a testament to the enduring values of Scouting - courage, respect, and commitment - embodied by Savage and the Australian team during their journey to the Olympics.
