EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century illustration showcases the diverse members of Ungulata, a major division of Mammalia consisting of all hoofed mammals. With their limbs adapted for running and having lost the power of grasping, these animals are divided into two orders: Perissodactyla (odd-toed ungulates) and Artiodactyla (even-toed ungulates). In this detailed print, we can observe a fascinating array of species from left to right. The top row features a majestic Fur seal of Sea Bear (1), followed by an impressive Walrus (2). Notably, skulls of both the Hippopotomus (15) and walrus (3) provide intriguing insights into their anatomy. Moving down to the second row, we encounter a graceful Tapir (7) alongside a sturdy Rhinoceros (5). Their respective skulls - rhinoceros skull (6) and tapir skull (8) - offer glimpses into their unique skeletal structures. The third row introduces us to an Ass (11), which stands beside an adorable Hyrax (4). A Horse skull (10) adds another layer of intrigue while showcasing its remarkable cranial structure. Finally, we witness the elegance and strength embodied by both horses (9). Completing this extraordinary display are three distinctive creatures in the bottom row: Peccary (14), Wart-Hog (13), and Zebra (12). Each one represents different characteristics that make them truly remarkable within
