Thorascopic surgery, artwork C016 / 6842

Thorascopic surgery. Artwork of an overhead view of surgeons carrying out video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This is a form of keyhole (minimally invasive) endoscopic surgery, with fibre optic video cameras and surgical instruments inserted into the patients chest (thorax). The access points (coloured dots) are called ports. This type of surgery is less traumatic than opening up the chest and rib-cage. The five coloured dots represent the camera (blue, 7th or 8th intercostal space), and instruments on the ventral (red, 5th or 6th intercostal space) and dorsal side (yellow, below scapula). Utility incisions (green) are made at the level of the lung hilum

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Thorascopic Surgery" provides a mesmerizing overhead view of surgeons performing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). The image showcases the remarkable advancements in medical technology and techniques, as fiber optic video cameras and surgical instruments are delicately inserted into the patient's chest through small access points known as ports. These ports, represented by vibrant colored dots, offer less invasive alternatives to traditional open-chest procedures. The blue dot signifies the camera's placement in the 7th or 8th intercostal space, while red dots indicate instruments positioned on the ventral side within the 5th or 6th intercostal space. Additionally, a yellow dot represents an instrument placed below the scapula on the dorsal side. Utility incisions made at lung hilum level are depicted with green dots. Through this intricate illustration, we witness how thorascopic surgery minimizes trauma by avoiding extensive chest and rib-cage openings. This technique revolutionizes patient care by reducing recovery time and post-operative complications. Created by D & L GRAPHICS for Science Photo Library, this artwork captures both scientific precision and artistic finesse. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity in merging cutting-edge technology with skilled medical expertise to improve surgical outcomes.
