Saturns moon Tethys, Cassini image

Saturns moon Tethys. False-coloured Cassini image of Tethys, one of the moons of Saturn. This is the side of Tethys that faces away from Saturn. Tethys is primarily composed of water ice, and is around 1070 kilometres in diameter. Two of the large craters visible on its surface are Penelope (centre left) and Melanthius (lower centre). At upper right, the flattened limb (rim) of the moon is due to the massive impact crater Odysseus. This false-colour image is based on ultraviolet, green and infrared data. The colour differences are thought to be due to variations in surface texture and composition. Image data obtained by Cassinis narrow-angle camera on 31 December 2006, at a distance of 414, 000 kilometres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Saturn's moon Tethys in all its celestial glory. The false-colored Cassini image reveals the side of Tethys that remains hidden from Saturn's gaze, offering a rare glimpse into this enigmatic world. With a diameter of approximately 1070 kilometers, Tethys is predominantly composed of shimmering water ice. The surface of Tethys is adorned with remarkable features, including two prominent craters named Penelope and Melanthius. Penelope takes center stage in this image, while Melanthius graces the lower center. At the upper right corner lies the flattened rim of Odysseus, an immense impact crater that has left an indelible mark on this moon. Crafted using ultraviolet, green, and infrared data obtained by Cassini's narrow-angle camera on December 31st, 2006 - from a distance spanning over 414,000 kilometers - this false-color representation unveils intriguing variations in surface texture and composition through its vibrant hues. As we marvel at this awe-inspiring sight captured by Cassini spacecraft during its exploration mission within our solar system in the early years of the twenty-first century, we are reminded once again of humanity's insatiable curiosity to unravel the mysteries beyond our own planet Earth. This extraordinary photograph serves as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of knowledge and understanding about distant worlds like Tethys within our vast universe.
