Pyotr Lebedev, Russian physicist

Pyotr Nikolaevich Lebedev (1866-1912), Russian physicist. Lebedev studied in Strasbourg, before taking up a position at Moscow University in 1891. In Moscow he carried out a famous experiment to measure the pressure of light. This was an important confirmation of Maxwells theory of electromagnetism. The Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow is named after him, as is a crater on the Moon. Photographed on 1 September 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the brilliant mind of Pyotr Lebedev, a renowned Russian physicist. Born in 1866, Lebedev made significant contributions to the field of physics during his short but impactful life. In this image taken on 1 September 1904, we see him at the age of thirty-eight, exuding an air of intellectual curiosity and determination. Lebedev's groundbreaking experiment conducted in Moscow holds great significance in scientific history. By measuring the pressure of light, he provided crucial evidence supporting Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism. This achievement solidified his reputation as a pioneering scientist and furthered our understanding of the fundamental forces governing our universe. The influence and legacy left by Pyotr Lebedev are commemorated through various means. The prestigious Lebedev Physical Institute in Moscow bears his name as a testament to his remarkable contributions to physics. Additionally, even beyond Earth's boundaries, there exists a crater on the Moon named after this exceptional individual. As we gaze upon this historical photograph captured over a century ago by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of Lebedev's immense intellect but also his dedication to pushing the boundaries of human knowledge.
