German U-boat attack, World War II C016 / 2543

German U-boat attack, World War II. Artwork of German sailors on the conning tower of a U-boat (submarine) that has surfaced after sinking a British cargo ship during World War II (1939-1945). Survivors are seen in lifeboats. During the Battle of the Atlantic and in the Arctic convoys, U-boats of the German Navy (the Kriegsmarine) attempted to prevent supplies of food and armaments reaching the UK and the Soviet Union. Thousands of merchant ships and some 200 warships were sunk. However, over 800 U-boats were lost and ultimately the blockades failed. This 1941 painting is by German artist Adolf Bock (1890-1968)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment during World War II, showcasing the relentless German U-boat attacks that took place in the treacherous waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Painted by renowned German artist Adolf Bock, this artwork depicts a haunting scene of German sailors standing proudly on the conning tower of their surfaced U-boat after successfully sinking a British cargo ship. The intensity and devastation of war are palpable as survivors can be seen desperately clinging to lifeboats amidst the vast expanse of ocean. This powerful illustration serves as a reminder of the immense human cost and technological prowess involved in naval warfare during this tumultuous period. During the Battle of the Atlantic and Arctic convoys, Germany's Kriegsmarine sought to disrupt vital supplies reaching both Britain and Soviet Union territories. Thousands of merchant ships fell victim to these deadly attacks, resulting in significant losses for both sides. However, despite their initial successes, over 800 U-boats were ultimately lost at sea, leading to an eventual failure in achieving their blockade objectives. As we delve into history through this monochrome masterpiece, it is impossible not to reflect upon the bravery and sacrifice exhibited by those who served aboard these submarines. The smoke-filled atmosphere hints at the chaos and danger faced by submariners every day as they engaged in fatal battles beneath turbulent waves. This poignant image stands as a testament to one chapter within World War II's complex narrative—a story encompassing heroism, tragedy, innovation, and resilience—forever etched into our collective memory.
