The photograph captures the densely packed streets of the town centre, with its labyrinthine network of houses and buildings, including the famous Jewish Quarter. The intricate layout of the urban landscape is juxtaposed against the picturesque harbour, where boats of various sizes and shapes are moored. Salonica, a vibrant and culturally rich city, has a long and complex history. Founded in 315 BC, it has been ruled by various empires and powers throughout the centuries, including the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Greeks. The city's multicultural heritage is reflected in its diverse population, which has included Jews, Christians, Muslims, and other religious and ethnic groups. Tragically, the serene scene depicted in this photograph was shattered in August 1917, when a terrible fire swept through the heart of the city.
