EDITORS COMMENTS
Saint Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans and French national heroine, is depicted in this evocative image as a young girl receiving a vision of her future role in leading her country against English domination during the Hundred Years War. Born in 1412 in eastern France, Joan was a simple peasant girl who claimed to have received divine messages from saints Michael, Catherine, and Margaret, urging her to save France from the English invasion. At the age of just thirteen, Joan began to hear voices that instructed her to go to the siege of Orléans and lift the English siege. Despite her young age and lack of military experience, she convinced the French military leaders to let her join their ranks. Dressed in men's armor and leading her troops with courage and determination, Joan became a symbol of French patriotism and heroism. The Hundred Years War, which began in 1337, was a long and devastating conflict between France and England over the French throne. The English had gained significant territory in France, and Joan's mission was to reverse this trend and restore French national pride. In May 1429, she led the French army to a decisive victory at Orléans, which marked the turning point of the war. Saint Joan of Arc's heroic actions continued, and she went on to lead several other successful military campaigns. However, she was eventually captured by the Burgundians, who sold her to the English. In 1431, she was put on trial for heresy and was burned at the stake. She was later canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1920, and remains a beloved figure in French history and a symbol of French nationalism. This powerful image captures the moment of Saint Joan of Arc's vision, as she stands barefoot and determined, with her feet firmly planted on the ground, ready to lead her country to victory.
