EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative image from the early seventh century, Saint Augustine of Canterbury, the revered figure who brought Christianity to the shores of England, is depicted in deep contemplation. Born in Thagaste, North Africa around the first third of the sixth century, Augustine was sent by Pope Gregory as a missionary to the pagan Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of Britain. Just before embarking on his momentous journey with about 40 companions, Augustine sought solace in Rome, expressing his apprehensions to Pope Gregory. However, his resolve was unwavering, and in 587, he and his companions landed on the coast of Kent, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Christianity in Europe. Augustine's efforts to convert the native Britons were met with immediate success. He was appointed as the first Bishop of Canterbury in 600, and his missionary work laid the foundations for the spread of Christianity throughout England and Wales. This period is now known as the "Gregorian Mission," named after Pope Gregory, who had envisioned the conversion of the English people. The image of Saint Augustine captures the depth of his spirituality and the profound impact he had on the religious landscape of Europe. His legacy extends far beyond the shores of England, shaping the course of Western Christianity and leaving an indelible mark on the annals of history. This photograph, believed to have been taken around 620 AD, serves as a poignant reminder of the transformative power of faith and the enduring influence of Saint Augustine's mission.
