Canvas Prints from Mary Evans Picture Library
Royal Pier, Southampton
Entrance to the Royal Pier, Southampton. The pier pavilion was extended in 1922 and the present gatehouse, described at the time as " wedding cake architecture", was opened in 1930 (designed by Edward Cooper Poole). Although the building as a whole is very ornate, one of the most noticeable features are the six cast-iron heraldic lions (just visible on this card) that survived from the earlier gatehouse. These magnificent crouching beasts, holding shields bearing the Hampshire Coat of Arms, were incorporated into the new design

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the past with this photograph of the Royal Pier entrance in Southampton, England. The pier's ornate pavilion, extended in 1922, showcases the grandeur of the early 20th century. The present gatehouse, a stunning example of "wedding cake architecture," was designed by Edward Cooper Poole and opened in 1930. Although the building as a whole is adorned with intricate details, the six cast-iron heraldic lions, just visible on the card, are a notable feature. These magnificent crouching beasts, each holding shields bearing the Hampshire Coat of Arms, were incorporated into the new design, preserving a piece of the pier's rich history. The pier's extension and gatehouse redesign reflect the Art Deco influence of the 1930s, adding to the architectural significance of this iconic Southampton landmark.
