EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken before the dissolution of their marriages on November 19, 1937, King Farouk of Egypt (1920-1965) and his wife, Queen Farida (1921-1988), are seen with the Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi (1878-1944), and his wife, Empress Fawzia (1918-1998), eldest sister of Queen Farida. The four royals are dressed in elegant Western attire, reflecting the fashion trends of the time. King Farouk and Queen Farida's marriage had been troubled since the early years, with rumors of infidelity and extravagant spending on the part of the king. In an effort to strengthen Egypt's ties with Iran, Farouk's father, King Fuad I, had arranged for his son to marry his niece, Princess Fawzia, who was also the sister of the Shah of Iran. The marriage between Farouk and Fawzia took place in 1938, but it too was short-lived, with the couple reportedly incompatible. Meanwhile, the Shah of Iran's marriage to Empress Fawzia was also facing challenges. She had converted to Islam to marry the Shah, but the couple's religious and cultural differences proved to be insurmountable. In an attempt to resolve the issues, the Shah and Empress Fawzia were sent on a tour of Europe, but their marriage was eventually dissolved in 1938. The dissolution of both marriages marked a significant moment in the history of the Middle East, with far-reaching political and diplomatic consequences. This photograph captures a rare moment of unity between the four royals, despite the impending dissolution of their marriages, offering a glimpse into the complex web of relationships and alliances that shaped the region during this period.
