EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, members of the European royal family gathered at Rosenau Castle in Coburg, Germany, to celebrate the engagement of the future Czarevitch Nicholas of Russia, later Czar Nicholas II, to Princess Alix of Hesse. The occasion was the wedding of Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh to Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, which took place on July 25, 1894. The image captures a joyful moment as the royal group poses for the camera. Seated in the center, the future Czarevitch Nicholas is seen wearing a military uniform, with a proud and confident expression on his face. His fiancée, Princess Alix, stands beside him, dressed in a beautiful white gown and holding a bouquet of flowers. Surrounding the couple are various members of the royal family. To the left, Prince Alfred of Edinburgh, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, is seen with his wife, Princess Marie of Edinburgh, who would later become the Crown Princess of Romania. Also present are Grand Duke Serge of Russia and his wife, Duchess Elizabeth, formerly Princess Elizabeth of Hesse, who were the parents of the future bride. To the right of the couple, Princess Beatrice of Edinburgh, the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria, is seen with her husband, Prince Henry of Prussia, formerly Princess Irene of Hesse. Prince Louis of Battenberg, formerly Princess Victoria of Hesse, and her husband, Prince Louis, are also present, as is Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse, the groom of the wedding that brought everyone together. Rosenau Castle holds a special significance to the royal family, as it was the birthplace of Prince Albert, the Prince Consort of Queen Victoria. This photograph captures a moment of joy and celebration, as the European royal family came together to mark the engagement of the future Czarevitch Nicholas and Princess Alix.
