View of Truro, Cornwall, from Polisco over the city. Between 1905-1910

This is a good view of the city and the cathedral without the west towers which were completed in 1910. In the back ground are the two railway viaducts. Daubuz viaduct on the right is nearing completion of its rebuild. Replacing Brunels original timber viaduct with the stone and brick built structure that can be seen behind the original. Two cranes are being used to dismantle the timbers of the old viaduct. Lemon quay and Kenwyn river is in the centre left, with Lemon Street bridge visible at the far end. Boscawen Bridge can just be seen centre right. At the bottom of the steep field in the foreground is Malpas Road. Photographer: Arthur Philp

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a stunning view of Truro, Cornwall, from Polisco during the early 20th century. Taken between 1905-1910, this image showcases the city and its magnificent cathedral before the completion of the west towers in 1910. The absence of these towers allows us to appreciate the architectural beauty of the cathedral without any obstruction. In the background, two railway viaducts dominate the scene. On the right is Daubuz viaduct, which is nearing completion of its rebuild. This new structure replaces Brunel's original timber viaduct with an impressive stone and brick construction that can be seen behind it. Two cranes are diligently working to dismantle the timbers of the old viaduct, showcasing both progress and preservation. Lemon quay and Kenwyn river take center stage on the left side of this photograph, with Lemon Street bridge visible at a distance. Boscawen Bridge can also be spotted towards the center-right portion of this picturesque landscape. At closer inspection, one notices Malpas Road at bottom foreground leading down a steep field – a reminder of Truro's varied topography. Captured by photographer Arthur Philp during Edwardian times in Cornwall, this print offers us a glimpse into Truro's rich history and architectural evolution while preserving its natural charm for generations to come.
