EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the early 1900s, capturing a nostalgic scene of Jacobs Ladder in Falmouth, Cornwall. The image showcases the iconic steps from Killigrew Street, with a group of children playfully occupying the foreground while a woman pushes a pram nearby. Two telegraph boys dressed smartly in their uniforms stand at the bottom of the steps, adding an air of authenticity to this historic snapshot. The Jacobs Ladder steps were originally constructed by Jacob Hamblen, who was not only a builder but also owned properties and ran businesses on Summer Hill and Moor respectively. In his entrepreneurial spirit, he built these steps in the late 18th century to conveniently connect his residence with his commercial ventures below. However, it wasn't until 1840 that these wooden ladders were replaced with sturdy granite steps - all 111 of them! As we gaze upon this beautifully preserved moment frozen in time by an unknown photographer, we can't help but admire both the architectural feat accomplished by Mr. Hamblen and the lively atmosphere surrounding it. The railings lining each step provide safety as well as character to this historical landmark. Let us cherish this remarkable photograph for its ability to transport us back over a century ago when hats and caps were fashionable accessories worn by gentlemen passing through town rather than mere fashion statements seen on billboards today. This photo is truly a testament to Cornwall's rich history and serves as an invaluable piece within Royal Cornwall
