EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the stern yet resolute visage of Sir Richard Rodney Bligh (1737-1821), a renowned naval commander during the Napoleonic Wars and Admiral of the Blue Squadron. Bligh's military career spanned over six decades, beginning in 1755 when he joined the Royal Navy at the age of 18. He rose through the ranks with distinction, serving under Admiral Edward Boscawen during the Battle of Quiberon Bay in 1759. Bligh's greatest achievement came in 1782 during the Battle of the Saintes, where he commanded the British fleet's right wing and played a crucial role in the decisive victory over the French and Spanish forces. For his bravery and leadership, Bligh was knighted by King George III and promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral. Throughout his career, Bligh demonstrated exceptional skill and determination in battle, earning him the respect and admiration of his peers and subordinates. He was known for his strict discipline and unyielding commitment to the Royal Navy's mission. This portrait, taken towards the end of Bligh's illustrious career, shows him in the uniform of an Admiral of the Blue Squadron, the second highest rank in the Royal Navy. The blue uniform signified Bligh's appointment as the second-in-command of the fleet, a position he held until his retirement in 1815. Sir Richard Rodney Bligh's legacy as a naval commander during the Napoleonic Wars continues to be celebrated, and this portrait serves as a testament to his unwavering dedication and leadership in the face of adversity.
