1483 1520 Larmessin Raffaello Sanzio

EDITORS COMMENTS
Raffaello (Raffaello Sanzio) - Mary Evans Picture Library (MN000158) Raffaello Sanzio, commonly known as Raffaello or Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance period. Born on April 6, 1483, in Urbino, Italy, Raffaello is widely regarded as one of the greatest artists in Western art history. This evocative portrait, titled simply as "Raffaello," is a testament to the artistic mastery and charisma of the legendary figure. Captured in this image, Raffaello exudes an air of intelligence, creativity, and sophistication. His piercing gaze and thoughtful expression suggest a deep contemplation, perhaps of the artistic ideas swirling in his mind. The artist's immaculate attire, adorned with a richly embroidered robe and a fur-lined cloak, further emphasizes his status as a man of refinement and culture. The portrait, attributed to the French engraver Jacques Larmessin, was created in 1520, a pivotal year in Raffaello's career. Having recently returned to Rome after a brief sojourn in Florence, Raffaello was at the height of his artistic prowess. Commissioned by Pope Leo X, Raffaello embarked on a series of frescoes in the Vatican Palace, including the iconic School of Athens and the Disputation of the Holy Sacrament. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a man whose artistic vision would forever change the course of Western art. Raffaello's influence can be seen in the works of countless artists who followed in his footsteps, from Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci to Velázquez and Rembrandt. As we gaze upon this image of Raffaello, we are reminded of the power of art to inspire, captivate, and endure through the ages.
