EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Westland Wapiti IIA (J9754 PT-F) of 1 (Indian) Service Flying Training School, as it sits proudly on the tarmac at Risalpur in India during World War Two. The Westland Wapiti IIA was a biplane trainer aircraft, which was primarily used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and its Commonwealth allies for elementary and intermediate flying training. The image portrays the aircraft in its original RAF colours, adorned with the roundel and serial number. The Wapiti IIA was a versatile machine, capable of being armed with machine guns and bombs, and was also used for reconnaissance missions. Its open cockpit design offered an unobstructed view for the trainee pilots, making it an ideal platform for teaching the fundamentals of flying. The photograph was taken in 1940, a critical period during World War Two when the demand for trained pilots was at an all-time high. The RAF and its allies were expanding rapidly, and training schools like 1 (Indian) Service Flying Training School were instrumental in producing the next generation of pilots. The Westland Wapiti IIA played a crucial role in this endeavour, providing a solid foundation for thousands of pilots who went on to serve their countries with distinction. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who trained and served during World War Two. It also underscores the vital role that training aircraft like the Westland Wapiti IIA played in ensuring the success of the Allied forces. Today, this historic aircraft is preserved at the RAF Museum, a testament to the rich aviation heritage of the RAF and its allies.
