Total solar eclipse, 1991

Multiple exposure of the total solar eclipse whichoccurred on July 11th 1991. The image shows thebeginning of the eclipse (left), the totality(centre) and the end. For a few minutes duringtotality the Moon completely covers the Sun makingthe solar corona visible as a shining white haloaround the solar disc. The solar corona is aregion of low density and high temperature (about1 million Kelvin) and represents the upper part ofthe solar atmosphere. It is usually undetectabledue to the overwhelming brightness of the innerregion of the solar atmosphere, the photosphere.The image was taken in California, United States..
