Torso bones. Historical anatomical artwork ofthe bones of the human torso, seen from the front.The backbone (vertical, centre) is a flexiblecolumn of 26 spinal bones (vertebrae) supportingthe body and protecting the spinal cord. Thebackbone joins to the skull (not seen) and to thepelvis (lower centre). The bones of the pelvisalso connect to the leg bones (not seen). Twelvepairs of ribs (connected to the backbone andbreastbone) form a protective cage (upper centre)around the heart and lungs.
