Some of the world's top stars and most popular films battled it out last night for honours at the 2008 National Movie Awards. Taking place at London's Royal Festival Hall, and hosted by actor James Nesbitt, all of the award winners were decided by fans themselves in a huge nationwide poll. Mamma Mia! was the main winner of the night after being named best musical. Its star Meryl Streep also beat off competition from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cate Blanchett to win the best female award. The Dark Knight triumphed over Iron Man, Hancock and The Incredible Hulk to be named best superhero. However, Christian Bale missed out on being voted best male with that honour going to Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was named best action/adventure.
