This stem consists mainlyof secondary xylem tissue (orange, centre), athin layer of secondary phloem tissue (not clearlyseen) surrounding the xylem, and an outer cork(brown). The xylem contains many vessels thattransport water and mineral nutrients from theroots throughout the plant. The phloem transportscarbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant.The cells of the cork are reinforced with lignin, which helps to maintain structural support.Magnification: x20 when printed 10 centimetreswide..
