Steam excavator and locomotive

Combined face shovel and grab excavator at work in Charwelton ironstone quarry, Northamptonshire, circa 1920. The quarry (Park Gate Iron and Steel) opened for the production of marlestone in 1917. Note the word 'Ruston' on the engine's cab: Joseph Ruston had first introduced the 'steam navvy' around 1880, and the majority of the steam excavators that were employed on the London Extension were built by this firm.
