The vertebra at centre (the L2vertebra) has been injected with an acrylic bonecement (dark blue) to prevent it from collapsing.This treatment is known as vertebroplasty, orcementoplasty. The collapse of a vertebra can becaused by conditions such as osteoporosis or bonecancer. In the case of bone cancer, cementoplastyalso helps to relieve the severe pain caused bythe cancer..
