The thick blood vessels (orange) arethe veins, while the thinner blood vessels (red)are the arteries. These bring blood to and fromthe smallest blood vessels (capillaries) thatinfiltrate the walls of the intestine, forming thetube shape seen here. It is in the capillariesthat nutrients (from digested food) and gases(oxygen for energy and waste carbon dioxide) areexchanged with the intestinal tissues.
