Skin cancer. Immunofluorescent lightmicrograph of squamous carcinoma cells, cultured from a tumour. This highly malignantcancer arises in epithelium: typically of theskin. Cell nuclei are blue; cyto- plasm stains red& green (for keratin), colours changing to red asthe cancer grows. Keratin is a fibrous skinprotein. Squamous cell carcinoma may be causedby high exposure to sunlight.
